David turned a corner, finding himself quite surprised to see Charles back in the hospital corridors. Last they'd met, he'd taken the young man's scans and discovered quite an enigma in the utterly unique patterns there. Granted, it would take someone of David's ilk to notice the minute differences, so the general practitioner, as incredibly qualified as he was, didn't appear to notice anything abnormal in the images but had still taken them away for further study.

"Mr. Xavier." He smiles warmly as he walks up to the young man's chair. His mother appeared to be in the Doctor's office having a muffled discussion. He needed a word with the Doctor, but it would have to wait apparently. "I'm surprised to see you back so soon."

He's trying to be friendly, but he's still concerned and as their last meeting had taught him, an equivalent exchange and treating him like the intelligent young man he was worked best.

**********************************

Charles knew what his mother was talking about, he didn't even need to hear it through the door. But when David came up, his usually placid face brightened into a smile of recognition. "Hi, David. My mum is talking with the doctors." Charles does try not to make a face, but he can't help it. Hospitals were no fun, that was for sure.

**********************************

David may not be a telepath, but he knows what would go through anyone's head at that point and joins in with Charles' expression.

"Ah. I see. Well..." He looks up and down the hall a moment before motioning for Charles to wait. He jogs quickly down to a cart, looks around a bit melodramatically, and then grabs a couple items out of the cart. He returns with a triumphant smile and holds the wrapped package out to Charles. It's an ice cream sandwich. "On the house."

**********************************

What was he up to? Charles cranes his neck to try and see before he gets back. He does accept the icecream but his smile is lacking. His mum was talking about putting him somewhere 'special'. He didn't like the sound of that. "Thanks," he said, nibbling on a corner.

**********************************

Again, David notices the posture and lack of Charles being the inquisitive young man he'd last talked to. With a sigh, he sits down in the chair next to Charles and unwraps his own treat. Staff have to eat sometime too.

"What's wrong?" No jokes, no smiles, just a very honest question. Something is really bothering this young man, something clearly is weighing on him and in David's opinion, he's too young to have such troubles with everything else he has to deal with.

**********************************

Charles just held onto his icecream, not very hungry.

"...they want to send me away." More specialists, more doctors. More stuff that Charles was not okay with.

**********************************

That surprises David and it registers clear as day on his face. Something really wasn't right about all this. A child being sent off? Nothing in the file David had seen indicated any sort of violent tendencies or behavior which might warrant such extreme measures.

"I think they mean they're taking you to a specialist. There's another hospital in the next state that is almost entirely dedicated to kids." David is the perpetual optimist, but something about Charles' tone tells him his positive spin may or may not be correct.

**********************************

Charles shakes his head no. "Not a hospital, it's for crazy people." An asylum. One where he could be observed closer. Charles finally looks up at David, worry in his eyes. He didn't want to go, even if he was crazy. You believed in him, David. "If I say no, what will happen?"

**********************************

Now, David's face falls. He wasn't a psychiatric specialist, but neither was Charles' Doctor. The man specialized in brain studies, certainly, but not the kind which would give him the knowledge and the background to recommend an incredibly young boy be sent alone to an institution. This was all very, very wrong and left a bad taste in David's mouth.

David looks up though before he can say anything as the office door opens. Charles' mother and the doctor walk out. The physician looks surprised, and then pleased that David is present. David doesn't miss that moment but then the doctor is asking him to escort David down to a room while Charles' mother is led in the opposite direction. Mystery was not a healthy thing in a hospital, and this whole situation smacked of it. David stands and holds a hand out to Charles.

"Come on, Charles." His mind though, is swimming with concern, and thoughts about going so far as to take the young man to the room, but only after getting into the now-emtpy office and looking at those files. It broke more rules and privacy laws that he could count, but something was going on here and he wanted to know what.

**********************************

Charles gets up and follows with David dutifully, turning to look over his shoulder as his mom is leaving with the doctor. He knew what both of them were thinking.

And then he overheard what David was thinking, which surprised him. "You could get in trouble for that," he says. He didn't want to get David into trouble. He was the only one that seemed to understand him in this place.

**********************************

David is so absorbed in how to execute the raid without being discovered, his response to Charles is automatic.

"I know but I..." At which point he stops himself and looks down at Charles. "For what?" Those bells from back during the scans are going off again, but being a scientist he knows better than to let himself jump to conclusions on the basis of an assumption.

**********************************

Charles is looking up at David worriedly. As if David is more cause for concern than his immediate problems. "You're going to break into the doctor's office to look at my files. But if you get caught, then you'll be in trouble." Which was bad.

**********************************

David gives Charles that look again, that expression where for a brief moment he's tempted to run, but not because he's afraid of Charles, but because he's afraid of what Charles may discover. There was no way the kid would know what was going through David's head unless...

"Charles, I need you to be honest with me. Can you do that with other people? Like your Mom, or anyone else?" The Doctor will obviously be a little while, but even aw David kneels to address Charles, his eyes glance up to make certain they aren't coming back early for some reason.

**********************************

Charles hesitates, looking around too. He didn't like to talk about it...but he had caught on to the fact that sometimes the thoughts weren't his own. His concern for David had caused him to slip up and reveal he knew more than he should.

Finally, he nods, his shoulders slumping. No use in denying it, he could already see in David's mind that he's guessed it. "Yeah."

**********************************

David had guessed it, but now he accepted it. He usually questioned those who outwardly claimed or displayed such commands of telepathy or abnormal prowess, but this time he wasn't. This was a scared little boy with something different, perhaps even wonderful, who needed someone to believe him. After that little display, and David's knowledge from the scans all those weeks ago, he very much believes Charles.

"Then you understand I want to help? I need to know what your doctor is saying to your mother, and I can learn that by looking in his files." If he really did need a doctor, David felt certain it would be somewhere else, and not the kind of place he said they wanted to send him.

**********************************

Charles nods again but he still looked worried. But if David thought he could help keep Charles from being sent away, he wanted to help too.

"They were going to the cafeteria for coffee." So there was going to be some time, but not much till they came back.

**********************************

"Okay, that should be enough time. We'll look quick, but if we don't find it right away we have to go to the room before we get in trouble. But I promise that I'll keep looking later, alright?" David hated to directly involve the boy, but it was his life and David could use an extra set of eyes.

The door to the office was unlocked, but the cabinets inside would be closed. David however, had privileged access to some of them so he could help retrieve files for various patients. He only hoped he could locate and access the ones regarding Charles without breaking into anything.

**********************************

Charles follows, his hand in David's and wondering...

David didn't think he was crazy. But Charles knew something was different about him. He didn't know what it was but somehow he knew.

"What are we looking for?" he asked when they got there. Maybe he could help look?

**********************************

"I need you to look around and see if you find anything that looks like it might be used to keep extra files. If you do, tell me but don't touch anything, okay?"

David brings Charles in and then leaves him at the center of the room while he moves over to a series of filing cabinets. He pulls out a set of keys and unlocks the one where he knows Charles' regular files are kept. There might be a clue in them, so it's worth a look, even if David doubts finding what they need is in the folder itself. There have to be documents somewhere that the Doctor uses to have patients transferred and processed.

**********************************

So they were looking for secret files. Charles' interest was peaked and he started searching in odd places. Under the desk, around the side of the filing cabinets. Nothing.

"The doctor would know where it is, right?" he queries, coming back over to David to see if he found anything.

**********************************

"I would think so, if he's the one making the actual recommendation." David pulls out Charles' folder and starts to flip through it quickly, looking for anything of interest. He's a bit preoccupied with looking for clues so his response is a bit distracted. He closes the cabinet behind him because he's checked it already, and retrieving Charles' folder could be passed off as well-meant foresight.

**********************************

Charles figeted, not sure if he wanted to do what he was about to suggest. "Then...maybe...if he was thinking about it..." But Charles didn't like using his ability yet. It was too scary, looking in other people's minds.

But if David needed something this badly that he was risking his own job for Charles, then it was pretty important.

**********************************

David pauses, just because he's preoccupied doesn't mean he isn't listening and he stops what he's doing and looks over at the boy.

"Charles, I don't think you should do what I think you're suggesting." It was tempting and would speed things up but it could start a habit that David was fairly certain could lead to problems later. "I know you want to help, but I don't think it's the right thing to do right now."

David was certain he could figure it out and get to the bottom of the mystery without risking Charles' mind.

**********************************

"Why not?" Charles wanted to know. He'd never really been taught the ethics of mindreading, mostly because he'd been told he was just hearing things. Inherently he knew it wasn't always right to eavesdrop. But didn't this count as a special situation?

**********************************

David closes the folder and comes over to Charles. They'll have to leave soon but he can take a few moments to talk with him directly. The search can resume later. He didn't know any specifics about mindreading ethics, but he also figured that Charles wasn't exactly in control of this ability.

"Because we don't know exactly how it all works. It could hurt someone, especially you. I don't want anything to happen to you but I think between the two of us, we can figure this out without taking any extra risks." David knew where risks got him, and he wanted to avoid them if he could.

**********************************

"M'not afraid..."

No, that wasn't true. He was scared of hurting someone else.

"...that picture is different." Charles points to a large painting on the wall. That wasn't here the last time he was in this office. The files they're looking for are taped to the back of it.

**********************************

David turns at Charles' indication. He recalls that at some point that picture had gone up, but hadn't connected it to Charles. With a smile he turns back to the boy.

"Good spot. See, nothing a little easy deducting can't figure out." He stands, going over to the picture and taking it off the wall. He's actually a bit surprised to find a file stuck to the back. He hangs the picture back on the wall carefully, and then starts to flip through the file.

"Right. Let's, get you down to your room and I'll xerox this before your doctor realizes we've found it."

**********************************

Charles' smile fades as he realizes they weren't alone. The doctor's voice speaking a moment later. "I don't think so," as he entered the room. Charles inched closer to David, knowing this was really bad.

"I'll take that," he holds out a hand for the file, two orderlies following in behind him in case David should get contrary.

**********************************

David had only managed a glance at the contents of the folder but it'd told him enough. He looks up calmly when he hears the Doctor's voice. He doesn't take any sort of aggressive posture, but it's clear he's quite suddenly gone from addressing the Doctor as a superior, to addressing him as an equal.

"First, I want to know why you're sending special patients to this institution." He gently waves the folder in the air, as if to half-surrender it, but waiting for an answer before he does. He keeps keen eyes on the doctor, but hasn't missed the presence of those orderlies. "You and I both know this boy is too young to go to a place like this legally."

**********************************

Charles has a small grip on David's shirt tail, watching everyone and hoping this wasn't as bad as it looked. Because it looked really bad. But his ears fairly perk up when David says he was too young to go to this place. Which meant this 'doctor' was a bad guy.

The doctor's easy demeanor was dropped like a mask, looking quite annoyed now that David had discovered the truth. "That's none of your business. Hand over the file before things get difficult for you."

**********************************

"Only if you let Charles and his mother leave the hospital safely." He slowly starts to surrender the file, but there's a side-look in his eyes that says he doesn't trust this doctor at all anymore.

He pointedly stays between everyone and Charles. It's a bad situation to be in, but the young man's safety is paramount. Privately he sends up a prayer hoping that this doesn't escalate. It's not until the thought is formed in his mind that he realizes it may not be the most helpful thought for the Charles if he catches it but he can't help his own concern. He knew these orderlies, and they were effective.

"I don't think anyone wants this to get out of hand, but only if you promise me that. Let them go."

**********************************

"Charles is a sick young man, he needs help." Obviously the doctor was going to smooth this over and do what he had planned all along.

He takes the file, flipping through it to be sure nothing was missing. "I shouldn't have to say it but...you're fired." Charles looks up at David, his own worry spilling over at him. Please don't go, his voice says inside of David's head.

And then he's being taken from the room by one of the orderlies. The other one set to escort David in the opposite direction. Charles tries to squirm away, "No...please, lemme go!" He didn't want to leave David.

**********************************

It's instinct that answers Charles' plea more than anything.

I'll keep you safe. There's also an angry voice in the back of David's head, it's quiet but there and it doesn't take a genius to read his body language. David doesn't care that he's been fired, he's not letting this doctor get his way.

"Hey!" David escapes from the grip of his own orderly. He doesn't run but he charges back toward Charles and the Doctor. "I won't let you do this!" He picks up his pace but his orderly quickly gets back over to David and pointedly grabs at him, slamming him bodily up against a wall. David grunts in pain but it's not quite enough to trigger him just yet. Still his head is swimming with that barely contained rage at what's happening. He wants to help, but David is also afraid, afraid of himself and what he might do if this gets any worse. He tries not to fight the orderly, but the man yanks his arm behind him.

"Please, don't!" He'll beg, he do whatever he has to, he just needs to make certain this boy doesn't get sent somewhere he doesn't belong.

**********************************

"This is out of your hands, Mr. Baines." Bruce might not see it, but Charles could definitely see what the doctor was doing. He was drawing up a large syringe of anesthetic, his plan clear as day in his mind.

Charles panics, knowing David was going to be the target for that needle. He's never used his ability like this, never even known he was capable. "Look out!" his mind fairly pulling at David's to try and warn him away from the danger. A picture of what the doctor planned on doing sent to David's mind from one scared little boy.

That angry presence was back, the one that Charles couldn't explain. Who or what was that??

**********************************

David starts to struggle now, Charles' message coming through loud and clear. The boy's panic spurs him though, and he gives a mighty shove against the orderly and it gets him enough room to turn and slip out of reach for the moment.

"Please, there's no reason for this..." Now he can see the Doctor coming for him with the syringe and recognizes the bottle of Ketamine. He puts out his hands, trying to ward off the man and his backup. David's heart is in his throat, he's frightened. He's been through this before and knows exactly how it ends. Rage, destruction, pain. Running.

And then the orderly gets the jump on David, pinning him as the Doctor administers the drug to him. His fight goes quickly, the drug causing his body to numb and he struggles to maintain awareness as his mind drifts. Please with David's capture, the Doctor has him quickly tossed into a nearby janitor's closet until they can deal with him.

Inside, that rage swells as David fights off panic, not only from being unable to help David, but also that sick sense that he knew what effects would follow that impressive dose. He's reached his tipping point, and now it's just a matter of those drugs barely keeping him human. The change is delayed for the moment, but it won't stay that way for long. His head pounding, there's no one to see those white eyes staring blankly up at the ceiling as he fights off the effects of the drug.

**********************************

They were taking him away. They were taking him away and David was locked in a closet. Charles struggled against the orderly who was bodily removing him, "David! Help, someone!"

"Charles, this is for your own good," the doctor was saying, following them out. It certainly didn't feel like it was for his own good. Charles was getting that sick scared feeling again...the green monster chasing him again...

And this time, it wasn't going away.

**********************************

It's most certainly not going away, and it's about to become very, very real. There's a low growl from the janitor's closet as the Hulk holds his head for a moment, the drugs taking a last moment to clear.

Then his rage is present in full, unrestrained and vaguely aware of what needs to be done. The door must go, it's in the way, so two impressive fists pull back, and then effortlessly knock the door off its hinges. Wood splinters and he walks out, flexing and growling angrily.

**********************************

Everyone stops the moment the door comes off its hinges. The doctor doesn't look so put together anymore, an incredulous look filling his features. "What in the...?"

Charles' eyes are round as saucers, his mouth open as he stares at the green monster. No, not a monster, a man. And he looked very real.

The orderlies are just as confused, but they're well trained and step in to take care of this odd looking big guy.

**********************************

The first orderly reaches out for the Hulk, but an almost careless swipe of the arm sends the man flying across the room and into a side table. He's out, and that second orderly isn't advancing so brazenly anymore. He's trying to circle around the Hulk, and as he does, the Hulk reaches out and grabs him by the shirt. A solid heave and he's sent flying out of the office door with a yell that trails off.

Now the Hulk turns toward the doctor and Charles, hands tense and an ugly snarl on his face. The Hulk knows the doctor is the one who hurt him, and Charles must be kept safe. He postures and roars at the doctor intimidatingly, locking his gaze on him and focusing all his rage. It was the man's only warning to choose fight or flight.

**********************************

The doctor might not know quite how to cope with this kind of situation. Or even know what kind of situation this was, but he was nothing if not quick to think on his feet. Charles finds himself pulled closer to the doctor, a hand tight around his arm as he backs up. Funny how this guy was more concerned about protecting himself instead of the kid. Terrified as Charles was, somehow...he knew he wasn't in danger. And he didn't move as the Hulk came closer.

"Stay back..." the doctor was warning the creature, for lack of a better word.

**********************************

The Hulk still snarled, though his next step forward was his last for the time being. With Charles being put between them, he needed to mind how he went about this. Hulk didn't usually think things through beyond "smash", but when David had a mission in mind, he usually could pull a few overcharged brain cells together to resolve a situation. A novel "smash" was still dealing with things.

For now he was limited to posturing and flexing, and then took another step forward. The Doctor pulled Charles with him, but stepped back as well. Almost methodically, the Hulk started to side step, herding the doctor slowly back toward that janitor's closet.

**********************************

Charles was too small to do anything but be dragged along, unable to take his eyes off the Hulk. The doctor had the same problem, trying to think his way out of this situation with all of his limbs intact. But he wasn't paying any attention to where he was backing into until it was too late.

**********************************

That's the point where the Hulk lunges forward, one arm reaching out quickly and snatching the Doctor by the shirt. The man is so surprised by the speed of it all that he lets go of Charles, both hands reaching up to hang on to the green arm.

The Hulk roars, and then throws the Doctor into the room. There's no door to put back so the fact that the man is now unconscious should have to be enough for now.

Finally, the creature turns back toward Charles, but the rage there is calming. The threat is dealt with, though he gives a look around to make certain of it before reaching down and gently picking up the boy in a single, secure arm.

Safe. It's a simple thought, but really the main one Hulk is concerned with as he reaches over and grabs one of the remaining side tables. He launches it for the window and thankfully they're not too far up. He starts walking for the broken window, with every intention of jumping down to the street below and running away from this place with dangerous people who want to hurt the boy.

**********************************

There's already people running and screaming, nobody knowing what was going on. But Charles didn't hear any of it. He still remembered what had happened in the MRI machine. And he was still scared, this was more than his telepathy could cope with right now.

He doesn't resist being picked up, trying to be brave. I want to be safe too, was his impression back at the Hulk.

What would his mom say if he ever told her what happened?

...wait, was the green man really going to jump that far?? They're on the second story.

**********************************

The Hulk makes certain the glass won't harm Charles before taking an easy leap out into the open air and landing. He does his best not to jolt Charles, but he's not exactly known for practicing soft landings.

He seems like he's about to set Charles down when his head suddenly turns and there's that staccato thought process in his head rolling again.

Run. Hide. Safe. Sirens meant people chasing the Hulk, and he tried to avoid that as best he could. Holding Charles in both arms he takes off, running away from the hospital and the loud noises that only make him more angry.

**********************************

Charles clings to the man as he's carried off, away from the hospital and all the people who wanted him locked up. Somehow, he felt safer with an angry rage monster instead.

And for some reason, the green man was protecting him. Charles keeps hanging on, feeling a little better. And a little less scared.

Where were they going?

**********************************

The Hulk rarely goes someplace recognizable to David, he's only looking so far as a place which is peaceful and quiet. This time he's trying to find somewhere both he and Charles can feel safe, which winds up being in a tiny grove of trees on the edge of a school. Laughter can be heard through the trees, but the scrub is dense enough here that even the close edge of the trees can't be seen from inside the overgrown grove. The Hulk clears out a few branches and sets Charles down, before taking a step away and holding his head as if he were overcome by incredible fatigue. The Hulk grunts, leaning on a tree and then slumping down next to it so he can sit on the ground.

**********************************

Charles' knees almost buckle when he's set down, his legs feel like jelly after a whirlwind ride like that. But he catches himself so he can stand, hugging his arms around himself worriedly. What was wrong with the green man? Was he sick?

He hesitantly approaches, not wanting to get him mad at him. "Are...are you okay?" He didn't look good. Charles wasn't even sure if he spoke. But he has to say something, "Thanks...for helping me."

**********************************

The Hulk looks dazed as he turns his gaze up at Charles. At the thanks, he almost seems to nod before looking away again and taking a deep, cleansing breath. Slowly, he starts to change, the green skin fading, the overdeveloped muscles and skeleton shrinking back and slowly revealing David as he holds his hands over his face a moment, his mind finally coming out of its blinding rage.

The moment he realizes what's happened, he nearly gasps, turning in place only to see Charles standing nearby. David is instantly standing up, his balance hardly off for more than a moment as he quickly reaches out to check the boy for harm.

"Charles, are you alright?" He can deal with he large, green, elephant in the room after he's checked Charles' health.

**********************************

Charles watches, transfixed, as the green monster shrinks down to...

"David!" He doesn't even answer his question, jumping the man to hug tightly around his neck. He was so glad to see him again, even if he was shaking a little bit, he was smiling.

**********************************

David is surprised by the positive reaction, but gently wraps his arms around Charles. The boy seems to be alright and in good spirits. He can't help a faint smile, there's a mess to clean up now an he has to find Charles' mother once the boy is safe somewhere, but for all the trouble the creature caused, it managed to do one thing right it seems.

"Hey. Glad to see you too." More than Charles might realize. He can't remember anything between being tossed in that closet, up to a few moments ago.

**********************************

Charles was just so glad that David was alright, he didn't know what to think when the green man came bursting out of that closet. But this, this was just too incredible for words.

But that didn't keep him from trying, finally letting him go, "That was amazing! How did you do that?? You just....picked those guys up!" Charles gestures excitedly, trying to describe how amazing the whole thing was.

**********************************

That's when David starts to feel incredibly awkward, rather than incredibly strong. Still, he manages a nervous laugh and looks around. No drying laundry in sight right now, so hoofing it to safety in bare feet and rags would have to be it, again.

"Whoah whoah, one word after another, alright?" He stands, ruffling Charles' hair fondly. "We're not out of the woods yet but we're out of the hospital at least." He had to talk Charles' mother into keeping the boy away from that place until the doctor was taken care of, either by having is practice revoked or moving away. One thing at a time though. First, he had to figure out where they were.

**********************************

"But..." Charles is confused, looking up at David. How could he not be excited about what he just did. But his mind gives the answer. "...you don't remember any of it?"

**********************************

David can only shake his head to confirm Charles'' realization.

"I never do." The weight to his voice should be as much indication as the heavy feeling on his heart that he's done this before. "I'll stay as long as I can, but it's not safe for me to stick around. But I promise that I won't leave until I know you'll be safe, okay?" McGee comes to mind, but David shelves that concern. He has to see this one through and will risk everything to make certain that doctor won't come near Charles again, or anyone else he wants to 'commit' to that sham of an institution.

**********************************

Charles remembered what happened very vividly. It's hard for him to understand that David never remembered when he was the other guy.

"You got me away...and you don't think I'm sick at all." It was no wonder Charles liked being around David. But he had a big question. "...when you changed it was like...I'd seen him before." The impression he had got from David during his own testing. Of running from the Hulk and never being able to get away. "That was you too?"

**********************************

David stops, looking a bit embarrassed as he sets a hand on his neck and looks down at Charles apologetically.

"Well, knowing what we both know now: yes, it was. It's part of a dream I have sometimes, and you had every right to be scared. It scares me all the time." David looks around a moment, they don't seem to have anyone in the area so he stops and gets down on a knee to address Charles on an equal level again.

"See, when I did your scans I was telling the truth, I'd been in that machine the night before because I'm trying to understand what's going on in my brain too. I thought about that dream while I was in the machine to see what it looked like. I think that while I was scanning yours, you started to pick up on whatever signals I was sending out. I'm sorry I scared you like that."

**********************************

Charles liked being talked to like an equal, everyone else seemed to always talk down to him. He smiles back at David. "It's okay...I'm not scared anymore." And this time, he meant it.

**********************************

"I'm very glad to hear that." David smiles warmly before standing up again. "Let's find your mother and get you home. I think I need to have a few words with the Administrator concerning your former doctor." There was no menace in David's voice, just a calm statement of fact. Considering the recommendations from the doctor had been falsified, David had a feeling the Administrator had no idea what was going on in that specific office. Hopefully bringing some things to light would garner actions which could start a real healing process for those people David imagined were already admitted.

**********************************

Charles nods and follows along too. He wanted to get this all over with...and for once be able to tell his mom that he wasn't sick.

Just different. And it was a good sort of different. But he couldn't help a mischievous question, "Are you gonna throw him in a closet too?" A half grin on his face.

**********************************

David smiles gently and shakes his head.

"Preferably not, but I guess we'll find out. I'll let you know how that goes." Finally he spots a shirt hanging on a clothesline a little ways off. Letting go of Charles' hand, he fishes in a pocket of his torn pants and manages to pull out a wayward 10-dollar bill.

"Ah, lucky day." He feels a little better about swiping clothes when he at least has a few bucks to put in its place on the line.

**********************************

Charles hasn't had many good influences in his life. So he just about studies David as he's paying for a shirt he's borrowing off a clothesline.

"Could you always do that? Turn into...um..." Charles fumbled for the right words.

**********************************

"Oh, uh, no." David shrugs the shirt on, making certain whoever owned it hadn't spotted him. "Actually, I used to be a scientist, but I had an accident during one of my experiments. Now I turn into that creature sometimes."

Pleased he hasn't been spotted, he continues to lead the way, looking for street signs.

**********************************

Charles keeps doggedly on his heels...and keeps up with the questions because this was all fascinating. "So he's always hiding till you need him? He sure was mad..." But strangely, not scary anymore for Charles. Maybe that's what he was excited about, facing his fear and finding out the monster wasn't scary.

**********************************

"It only happens when I'm hurt or experiencing extreme emotions, like anger, fear or sadness. There are times I don't want it to happen, but it does anyway." He tries to smile through that, but he knows now that he can't hide how much it bothers him. He just wants enough control to avoid incidents like today long enough to resolve them without the violence it introduces. He really feels that so many of the situations he finds himself in, can be resolved without the Hulk's interjecting.

**********************************

Charles could sense how sad David was about it. He kind of understood too, kids understood wanting to get angry and having to control it. "I wish..." he starts but trails off, just walking along. Charles wishes he could help.

They were almost back at the hospital, the place was completely a mess. Evacuation and police cars, ambulances and people outside.

**********************************

David is nervous now that they're just about to the edge of the commotion. His clothing is out of place, he's lacking shoes, and he knows it's only a matter of time until more trouble comes for him. Either someone notices he has Charles along, or the inevitable media makes its appearance.

"We should find your mother, and get you on your way home." He looks around the moving mass of people, not missing the large broken window and for a moment wondering how he safely ferried Charles through the jagged glass and down to the ground below. Then his attention is back on the crowd, but everything is chaos, and he's having trouble looking for a face he's seen only a couple times.

**********************************

Charles stops when David does, looking worriedly from the commotion to him and back. Obviously they were both in a lot of trouble. "Um...I can find her myself?" Somehow, he knew David couldn't stay, not like this. And Charles didn't want him getting caught either.

But before they can leave, a voice stabs through the noise. "That's him!!" The doctor was back and he looked upset. Not only was he made a fool of by a strong man with GREEN skin, he had lost his best subject. And now he was pointing David out to the police to catch him.

**********************************

David straightens, almost defiant in the face of the police coming for Charles and then calmly turns him in a new direction. Now the crowd will serve to help them evade capture by slowing down the pursuit. He'd promised the boy he'd stay until he was safe, and he intends to follow through. He reaches over and sets a hand on Charles' shoulder, guiding him back into the crowd.

"It'll be alright Charles. We'll work this out together. I promise, but we need to leave now. We can find your mother after things calm down." He only hopes they can evade capture in the crowd long enough to get clear again and hide out.

**********************************

Charles has been able to put two and two together. He was partly the reason for this and definitely the reason that David was putting himself in danger of being caught.

The policemen and doctor are catching up to them, the blue suits calling for David to stop and let the kid go. Likely he'd been talked up as a kidnapper.

**********************************

David's trying to speed up, pushing through the crowd a little more forcefully but still keeping Charles' way clear. The police were calling for Charles, and shouting for people to clear the way to David. As some started to move, David and Charles began to lose ground, the police closing in.

"Charles, you're going to have to run." David urges the boy forward. "I'll be right behind you." His heart was racing, he was fearful there'd be another event right here in the middle of a crowd, and then someone could really be hurt if he accidentally lashes out.

**********************************

"But..." he tries to argue, not wanting to let go of his hand. There wasn't time for ifs, ands, or buts. Things were happening too fast, Charles just wished they could stop for a moment...everyone just needed to stop.

He shut his eyes and tried very hard to do something...

Everyone suddenly started slowing to a complete stop. David was the only one left running. It was as if someone had hit pause to the movie they were in.

**********************************

David almost trips over Charles and someone next to them when it feels like that rushed sensation just dissipates. Instantly he glances behind him to see the police appear almost frozen in time, along with the rest of the crowd.

He stops in his tracks, shocked and dumbfounded at the scene and then realizes that he and Charles seem unaffected. It doesn't take much to realize who must be the source of the incredible phenomena.

"Charles..." He looks back at the doctor, also stopped where he is. It takes him another second before his whole mind finally finishes catching up. "I...go. We need to go. Right now."

He's actually fearful of how much power the boy must control in order to have accomplished such widespread crowd control, and he grabs Charles' hand, leading the way through the paused crowd.

"The second we get clear, you have to undo this. All of it. Do you understand?" There's no anger in his voice, but it's imperative that his demands are followed. There's no request here, Charles has to let all these people go.

**********************************

Charles hadn't ever done anything like this before. It felt really...strong. Like he could do anything.

And he was a little scared of it. Charles stumbles along, clinging to David's hand. He can't even talk, just nods. He'll undo it. He just wanted to protect David the same way he had protected Charles.

**********************************

Charles has two working legs, but David still pauses long enough to finally pick him up and start running. Even human, he's nothing to sneeze at. Regular and extended jobs doing hard labor have helped him out, so the boy is not too much of a burden.

He weaves through the edges of the crowd, and finally speaks again.

"Now. You need to fix it now. Before this goes too far. Please."

**********************************

Once he's started, it's almost too easy to keep them all frozen in place. He holds onto David, looking back over his shoulder at the silent crowd. A sense of understanding coming to Charles, this was more than just telepathy and hearing other people's thoughts. He could also manipulate their thoughts to protect himself and others.

The moment David tells him to, the crowd goes back in motion as if someone just hit play. The police completely baffled that their quarry just disappeared into the crowd that fast, the doctor incredulous that they let something like that happen.

**********************************

David glances back around the corner briefly to see that things are back as they should be, and then starts off at a brisk walk with Charles' hand in his.

"Thank you." He's a bit breathless, surprised and a little scared by the incredible power which has been placed in the hands of a child, albeit an incredibly brilliant child, but a child nonetheless. He takes a breath, calming his mind and accepting the facts of the situation, before looking back down at Charles.

"I think, perhaps it would be best if we got you home instead. I can make a phone call and see about having those police chasing the doctor, instead of us. How does that sound?"

**********************************

That child seems to have aged slightly. As if he understood what kind of ability he had now. He stood a little straighter, had more confidence in himself. And less likely to be afraid.

"Okay, that sounds good. My home isn't far away, it's in Westchester." He can always give the address to a cab driver.

**********************************

"Okay, that's not too far at all." David nods, looking down at Charles and seeming to notice a slight change in the boy. It's actually encouraging, perhaps he understands the gift he has, because David knows he certainly can't grasp what it must be like. Still, it's a positive thing to see and David smiles gently down at Charles.

"Your mother may have to foot the bill for a taxi, I don't think anyone would be too keen to let a pair like us hitch a ride." It was terribly suspicious, if anything, but David seemed more amused by the statement than anything. "You really are an incredible young man, Charles. We'll get you home, and I'll make certain that doctor can't get near you again."

**********************************

"She won't mind." Or care probably. Charles walks along with David to try and find a cab. He finally smiles but there's a little bit of worry in his eyes. "I'm sorry you lost your job."

**********************************

To be honest that thought hadn't even crossed David's mind. He was so used to the transient lifestyle, and life forcing him to move on after any period of time that the idea of 'losing' a job barely even registered.

"To be honest? I really didn't like working with that doctor anyway." He smiles, giving Charles' hand a little squeeze as he hails a cab. Having driven a cab himself, he knows exactly how to get their attention and one is starting to pull over for them already.

**********************************

"I didn't either," Charles says as he watches the cab pull up. The driver gives them a quizzical look, but a slight nudge from Charles that they must be father and son dispels any questions he might have as he asks where to. Charles gives the address and they're on their way.

**********************************

The whole situation feels a little too easy, though David says nothing as they get into the cab. Once they're seated and on their way though, he glances over at Charles with a questioning glance. It's not disapproving, but he's not oblivious either.

At least he lets go of Charles' hand while they're riding along. There's no reason to make certain he stays next to him, though David does keep a casual eye out for police. They're not out of the woods yet until Charles is home, and an anonymous tip is placed.

**********************************

It's a different section of town that his house is in. And what a house. A long driveway up to the mansion as the cab driver pulls up to the front. Charles hops out to go into the front door, returning with money and letting the happy cab driver keep the change.

**********************************

David is actually rather shocked by the place they pull up to, and for a moment is actually wondering if the cabbie has the wrong address. That is until Charles jumps out. David stays with the cab, to assure the driver he'll be paid and is pleased that Charles does manage to return with the money and then some.

"Well, I'll say you just made his day." David waves back as the driver gives a thankful beep of his horn. He turns back to the house and takes a moment to view it before nodding and letting Charles lead the way in.

"It's....big." He almost laughs at himself. Charles certainly had a humbleness about him even at this young of an age, a mansion was the last place David had imagined he'd reside with his mother. "Very lovely."

**********************************

"It's alright," Charles says with a grin, waving for David to come in. Sometimes it was just too big and too empty so having company was a good thing.

There's a phone handy in the foyer for making phone calls. His mother is home, Charles can hear her pouring herself a drink in the living area. She didn't even know Charles was missing from the hospital.

**********************************

David follows Charles in, his amused expression falling as he notices quite certainly that Charles' mother is not exactly reacting the way he knows many mothers would. It was off, and he gives Charles a worried look. True, it was better that he was home with his mother, but he wonders if his mother was at all aware of the situation she had nearly put her son into.

"I'm, going to make that call and then we can talk to your mother, alright?" He seems less certain about the situation, though he's still set on calling that doctor out.

**********************************

Charles nods, letting David have control of the phone while he goes to see his mum. She's surprised he's home so soon, giving him a peck on the cheek but she's distant. She's been like that ever since Charles' father died and she started drinking. Charles is not disturbed by it, if anything he sees himself as taking care of his mum more than she tries to take care of him.

**********************************

David makes his phone call, reporting that Charles was returned home while informing the police that there was evidence in the Doctor's office, indicating malpractice. He explains how the boy was nearly sent to an institute meant for highly disturbed adults, and then leaves the police to finish up filling in the details. Hanging up, he waits in the hallway for Charles to return. After that phone call, it's likely the police will show up to verify the story. He can't reasonably stick around and not expect questions to come up.

**********************************

Charles is cleaning up a few empty wine bottles, his mum sleeping on the couch. He doesn't expect David to try waking her, he's almost used to this by now. Covering her with a blanket before he leaves the room to talk to David.

"You've got to go, don't you?" he asks worriedly. Can't fool a telepath, not even a young one.

**********************************

David watches Charles, a bit in awe at the responsibility the young man has taken upon himself. He wants to stay and help, clearly the work here is not done but he doesn't have an option. With a solemn nod, he confirms what Charles already knows.

"I'm sorry. I have to, but I can stay in town for a little while longer, just to make sure that everything works out the way it should. I promised I'd stay until things were alright, and I intend to follow through. I just can't stay here right now."

**********************************

For how young he is, Charles does understand quite a bit. And now that he knows what his ability is, he'll only get better at understanding the world around him and the people in it.

But he was still a kid. One that didn't currently have a father figure. So he can't help latching on to David for one more hug. "I know." He knows it's too dangerous for David to stay. He won't even ask if he'll be back sometime because he didn't want any lies about it.

**********************************

David had once wanted children, so they seem to make a good match. Gladly, he returns the hug from Charles, a smile working its way back onto his face.

"I'll be around for a few days. If I can, I'll try to stop by before I leave." It wasn't a promise, but the words weren't empty either. If he could, he really would make one last stop by. He hopes his luck holds enough to let him have that at least. Charles is an amazing kid, and David hates to leave him in a situation where he almost seemed like he was on his own.

**********************************

Charles would be alright. He was a smart kid and he knew how to survive on his own. But he wouldn't be alone for long....

"Thank you," he says, knowing he might not get another chance to say it. "For saying I wasn't crazy."

**********************************

David gives him one last warm hug before letting go with a smile to match on his face. He sets a hand on Charles' shoulder and nods.

"Of course. You're a brilliant and special young man, Charles. Don't let anyone tell you any differently. You be careful, alright?" David stands, he has to get moving. If the police haven't raided his apartment, he might be able to recover some things before leaving, among them a pair a shoes.

**********************************

Charles smiles too. And then doesn't let David leave till he rustles up a pair of shoes for him and anything else he can find to help him on his way. Like a backpack with a few sandwiches in it.

**********************************

David tries to leave, but Charles is so adamant, he can't help but stay and accept his kindness. He thanks him a few times, telling him it's unnecessary, but all of this is giving David such a head start, he finally relents.

He doesn't leave without giving Charles one last hug, a thanks and finally a proper "goodbye", before walking out of the door with a friendly wave.

**********************************

Charles waves too, feeling sad to see such a good friend go. Hopefully....someday...

He would see David and his green friend again.
